Our Mission:

The mission of Bridges Project for Education is to expand college access and improve college retention for students of all ages with an emphasis on first-generation students

Our History:

Bridges was created by a group of concerned citizens and educators in response to the extremely low number of college graduates in northern New Mexico. Recognizing that Taos County’s future is directly linked with our ability to educate our young people, Bridges Project for Education was formed to provide more opportunities for students to attend college or vocational schools. Bridges is the only organization in Taos County whose primary purpose is to provide free, comprehensive college counseling. In eleven years, Bridges has worked individually with over 1,770 students and their families.

What We Do

Individualized, Comprehensive College Counseling:

Bridges works individually with students and their families, meeting with them multiple times throughout the academic year to help them research and apply to colleges, write application essays, register for college entrance exams and locate financial aid and scholarships.

College Fairs:

Bridges hosts an annual college fair to provide a venue in which students and their families will be exposed to a variety of higher education options. Our fairs are different from traditional college fairs in that community members represent their alma maters and comprise the majority of schools at the fairs. It is our hope that students and their families will begin to build lasting relationships with these local alumni, dispelling the idea that if our kids go away to college they will never return to northern New Mexico. Historically, we have had an average of 44 schools from around the nation represented at our college fairs. This is a special opportunity because it is difficult for students and their families to visit colleges and students would have to drive to Santa Fe or Albuquerque to attend the nearest college fair.

Alumni Panel Discussions:

Local alumni from a broad range of colleges, universities and vocational schools speak candidly about their college experiences. Youth and their parents ask questions about paying for college, academic and college social life, leaving home for the first time, and life post-college.
