OVERVIEW OF BRIDGES’ PROGRAMS

One-on-One College Counseling

Although technological resources are a big help to the college-bound student, nothing can replace a one-on-one conversation with a skilled college counselor. That’s what Bridges provides, free of charge. Sometimes the application and financing procedures for going to school can take a year. It takes a lot to stay focused. Preparing for college by taking prerequisite courses means thinking about college even earlier.

Bridges walks side-by-side with students throughout the process. Bridges works with anyone that wants to go to college, with an emphasis on low-income, minority, and those who are the first in their families to go to college. Most of our clients are from Taos, Peñasco, and Questa, New Mexico.

Bridges’ College Counselor, Ben Vásquez, meets regularly with college-bound students.

Bridges Project Counseling is made possible by grants from McCune Charitable Foundation, Rowe Foundation and LANL Foundation.

College Summit

Throughout the country, there is a movement to send more low-income, minority, and first-generation students to college. Currently, Bridges and its local partners are the only organizations in New Mexico that take students to the incredible introduction to college called College Summit. This four-day workshop helps students see their special qualities and capacities and allows them to see a more exciting array of educational possibilities than they knew existed.

College Summit participants leave
“fired up” about going to college.

By the end of the College Summit weekend students have finished an application accepted by over 100 colleges, and they are “fired up” about college. They are rising high school seniors, and Bridges is there all year to provide weekly follow-up sessions. Bridges’ participation in College Summit in 1999 was sponsored by the LANL Foundation. Thank you!

Centinel Bank ACT Prep Workshops
and Essay-Writing Workshops

Each spring and fall, college-bound students prepare to take the ACT Assessment, a test used by colleges and universities to predict first-year grades in college and select new students. Preparation for the ACT is especially important for minority students, who, according to national averages, tend to score lower. Thanks to Centinel Bank of Taos, Bridges provides ACT Success Workshops in March and September, about a week before the test is given at Taos High School. Bridges also provides essay-writing workshops in local high schools.

College Tours

“One of the most important things Bridges does is put kids in a van and take them out of town.”  Many Northern New Mexican students have never left the region. It makes a difference to see the fun, resources, and opportunities that await them at places like Adams State College in Alamosa, Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute (TVI), New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico State University in Las Cruces (NMSU), New Mexico Tech in Socorro, Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque (SIPI), and University of New Mexico-Albuquerque (UNM).

Through these tours, students can imagine themselves on the college campus, or rule out schools that don’t feel right for them. These tours are made possible with support from Bread For The Journey Foundation and collaborating social service agencies in the area. Thank you!
