What to take in high school

The academic courses listed here are required for admission to many 4-year colleges. The following courses are just suggestions. Consult college catalogs to see what specific colleges require. *

Language Arts (English)
4 years in literature, writing, and/or speech

Math
3 or 4 years, including:

  • algebra
  • geometry
  • algebra II
  • trigonometry

Science
3 years beyond general science, including:

  • biology
  • chemistry and/or physics
  • earth sciences, advanced biology/chemistry/physics

Social Studies
3 years, including:

  • U.S. history
  • U.S. government
  • economics/world history or geography

Foreign Language
1-2 years (now required by many colleges)

Electives

1-2 years including art, music, computers, or career
development

LOBOS V. AGGIES

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
 

University of New Mexico (Lobos)

4 units* of English with at least one unit earned
in 11th or 12th grade composition

2 units of a single language other than English

3 units of mathematics from the following list: algebra, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, or higher mathematics

2 units of science, one which must be a laboratory science (recommended: earth or physical science, biology, chemistry, and physics)

New Mexico State University (Aggies)

4 units English, including at least 2 units of
composition, one of which must be a junior
or senior-level course.

2 units science beyond general science

3 units mathematics from algebra I, algebra II,
geometry, trigonometry, or advanced math.

1 unit foreign language or fine arts

* 2 units = one year of study
