What to take in high
school
The academic courses listed here are
required for admission to many 4-year colleges. The following
courses are just suggestions. Consult college catalogs to see what
specific colleges require. *
Language Arts (English)
4 years in literature, writing, and/or speech
Math
3 or 4 years, including:
- algebra
- geometry
- algebra II
- trigonometry
Science
3 years beyond general science, including:
- biology
- chemistry and/or physics
- earth sciences, advanced
biology/chemistry/physics
Social Studies
3 years, including:
- U.S. history
- U.S. government
- economics/world history or
geography
Foreign Language
1-2 years (now required by many colleges)
Electives
1-2 years including art, music,
computers, or career
development

be a laboratory science (recommended: earth or physical science,
